In the center of the Vara de Rey Square stands the figure of a general who, sword in hand, watches from his perch. It´s the monument to General Joaquin Vara de Rey and Rubio, born in the Castle of Ibiza and died heroically in the battle of El Caney fighting against the powerful American army during the War of Independence of Cuba (1898). The monument, in a modernist style, was raised by donations from all the Spanish people, who thanked and his quest. The inauguration was attended by King Alfonso XIII in 1904.
