Corsairs monument

Obelisk dedicated to Corsairs, by the Catalan architect Augusto Font. It is the only public homage to pirates that exists in the world together with the British monument built in honor of Sir Francis Drake. Started in 1906, coinciding with the anniversary of the capture of Gibraltar flag ship Felicity by schooner San Antonio Ibiza and Santa Isabel, led by Antoni Riquer. The arrest was a feat, since foreigners plying British patent corsairs, were far superior in arms and men, and served the orders of a famous pirate of the time: Miguel Novelli, aka the Pope. The obelisk was finally inaugurated in 1915 and pays tribute to all the brave sailors who, over the centuries, life played in the Mediterranean waters to safeguard the island. These Ibizan corsairs had no bad reputation, but their legend grew under the letter of marque that gave them the Crown in their dangerous missions. Their great invention was the fire bottles, jars filling of powder and threw enemy ships, decimating their crews. They were distinguished by their courage, against much larger and higher caliber artillery ships.
