Cartuja de Valldemossa

La Cartuja is an emblematic monastery located in Valldemossa. The building was originally a palace, built by king Jaume II for his son Sancho, therefore the construction is also known as "Palacio del Rey Sancho". In 1399 the palace was donated to Carthusian monks, who converted it into a monastery. The building became famous worldwide thanks to Frédérick Chopin, who spent a year living in la Cartuja with the writer George Sand. This was the scenery where the famous musician composed his Prelude Op. 28 and Sand wrote "A winter in Mallorca". The building houses the Municipal Museum, with an interesting collection of contemporary art, and is often used for different kind of events, such as classical music concerts.
