Cala Saona - Varadors ( Boat Sheds)

In parts of rocky cliffs, coves and coast of Formentera, and just like another element of it, we can find structures made of centenary juniper wood and that look at the same time, recently build. Made to "put at sea " and " dry out " small fishing boats, we call them "Casetes Varadero" ( Slipway Houses). As a result of storms or floods, the "varadors" or Slipway Huts often suffer damage or are even completely swallowed by the sea . It is just this weakness and need of love for their subsistence their big valuable today: despite its fragility, their existence nowadays, remaining as symbols of the seafaring tradition of the island of  Formentera, as examples of the will of their builders, to rebuild them as often and as many times as it was required and like some kind of evidence of the big impact and the major role played by the sea and the sailors in the economy of subsistence of Formentera until the arrival of Tourism. In Cala Saona you´ll find them on the left side of the beach. Please respect their space and keep the area clean, if they´re occupied and you ask for permission they will show them to you.
